What Is Hand Surgery?

Hand surgery is a specialized surgical field at the intersection of Orthopaedics & Traumatology and Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. It addresses diseases, injuries and functional loss of the upper extremity — including the hand, wrist, forearm, elbow, arm and shoulder. The complex anatomy of the upper extremity requires bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, nerves and vessels to be evaluated as a whole.

The primary goal is not only to treat disease or injury, but also to preserve or restore motion, strength, sensation and function of the hand and upper extremity as fully as possible. Care therefore relies on detailed clinical assessment, advanced imaging and, when needed, specialized techniques such as microsurgery and arthroscopic surgery.

Who Is a Hand Surgeon?

A hand surgeon is a surgeon with specialized training and experience in diagnosing and treating diseases and injuries of the hand, wrist, forearm, elbow, arm and shoulder. They also perform advanced microsurgical procedures such as limb amputations, replantations and tissue transfers.

In Türkiye, becoming a hand surgeon requires completing a 6-year medical degree and then a 5-year residency in Orthopaedics & Traumatology or Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. After residency, candidates must pass the Subspecialty Examination (YDUS) to enter advanced hand surgery training.

Physicians who pass YDUS are admitted to a 2-year hand surgery fellowship, receiving advanced training in traumatic, orthopaedic and reconstructive conditions of the upper extremity, especially the hand, wrist, forearm and elbow.

After fellowship, physicians take a specialty examination. Those who pass are awarded a HAND SURGERY SPECIALTY DIPLOMA by the Ministry of Health in accordance with applicable regulations.

To practice as a Hand Surgery Specialist in Türkiye, a physician must complete this official specialty training and hold the HAND SURGERY SPECIALTY DIPLOMA issued by the Ministry of Health.

2 yıl önce elimin üzerine düştüm. Bileğimde kırık olduğu söylendi alçıyla tedavi edildi. Ancak alçı çıkarıldığından beri 2 yıldır geçmeyen bilek ağrım vardı. Doktor doktor gezdim çare bulunamadı. İnternette araştırınca Dr. Ali Beyi buldum. Bu konuda uzmanmış. El bileğimde bağ yaralanması olduğunu söyledi ve kapalı yöntemle ameliyat etti. Ağrılarım geçti çok şükür. Allah kendisinden razı olsun.

Spor esnasında tendonum koptu. Tendon onarımı ameliyatı oldum. Süreç boyunca doktor bey çok ilgiliydi. Kendisinin de önerilerine uyarak fizik tedavi sonrasında spora geri dönebildim. Çok teşekkür ederim.

3 yıl kadar önce sağ elimi iş makinasına kaptırdım. elim paramparça olmuştu parmaklarım yaşamıyordu. Doktor bey mikrocerrahi ile damarlarımı sinirlerimi dikti. tedavim aylarca sürdü ve sonunda el fonksiyonlarımı büyük ölçüde geri kazandım. Ali bey ve ekibi gerçekten mükemmel çalışıyorlar. Allah yardımcıları olsun.
